Naval Research Laboratory
Documentary Visual Design
The Naval Research Laboratory and veteran director, David Bellino, hired Sulky to aid in the conceptual, narrative, environment, and motion design development for a film that highlights the landmark, and often unsung, advances and contributions made by the organization since it’s inception over 85 years ago.
The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is the corporate research laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps and conducts a broad program of scientific research, technology and advanced development.
This film is to headline a public interest campaign that seeks to turn heads and raise awareness of NRL’s accomplishments.
The film’s concept was to use a young boy exploring a lost-to-history barn interior in the early 1900s. The barn was to be furnished with odd-looking instruments and clearly advanced technology, while still feeling accurate to the period. These instruments and elements would be host to specific NRL highlights as functional design elements.
The director of the film contracted Sulky to design the barn’s interior and elements, to explore the design of the shots, the environment of the barn, the finished barn shot. Sulky was also contracted to design and execute the motion transitions highlighting both specific technologies and NRL installations. We were responsible for both the conceptual and narrative design and development, as well as the execution of final film-ready assets.
